The Kelowna Yacht Club is home to one of the most competitive sailing teams in the Okanagan. Members of the team compete at local, provincial, and national level regattas in youth fleets such as Optimist, Byte, Laster, Laser Radial, CLub 420, and 29er. During the summer, the team trains three nights a week and competes in regattas on weekends. Attending up to a dozen regattas annually, our racers have racked up a significant number of medals.
The race team is not only a place for training and competition; it is a place where members learn sportsmanship, fair play, and develop a life long love of sailing. Many lifelong friendships have developed between team members and competitors from around the country as a result of the time they spent sailing together. Racers also gain a great deal of experience racing in a multitude of conditions which proves useful when they wish to become sailing instructors.
The team is broken down into two components: junior team and senior team. Upon joining the team, sailors train with the junior team. This enables them to gain knowledge and experience at the club level and with fun being the major goal. Along with Bytes and Lasers, the junior team has a strong contingent of Opti sailors. Our Opti team is the only Opti team in the interior! Opti sailors can join the team as young as eight years old. They focus on becoming comfortable in their boats and learn to sail in all conditions from light to heavy winds. Before joining the team, Optis meet with Coach Jen Braem to determine what level of competiiton they would like to participate in.
More experienced sailors train with the senior race team. These sailors are primarily instructors, skiff sailors, and experienced single-handed sailors. Members of the senior team compete in provincial and national level events that have included Youth Nationals, Canadian Laser Nationals, and the Canada Games. They regularly travel around western Canada to find the best competition possible.
If you are interested in joining the Youth Race Team please contact Jen Braem.. Sailors must have achieved their White Sail III and must have permission to join. Optis interested in joining the team must be under fifteen years of age. White sail III is not required for Opti sailors to join.
Cost: $225.00 for May through until September.
