The
two Gillians go buoy-to-buoy on the water
This
past weekend, the Kelowna Yacht Club (KYC) and the Central Okanagan
Sailing Association (COSA) hosted one of the most successful national
womens sailing events ever held in Canada. Just over 100
women from B.C., Alberta and Ontario were on the waters of Okanagan
Lake for the 2007 Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) Womens
National Keelboat Championship.
Friday,
September 21st, featured a CYA training camp for the twenty two
teams who appreciated the time and talent of Coach Devin Rubadeau
and local guest expert John Sharples. By the end of the day teams
were tired, happy, and certainly ready to tidy up for the evenings
Welcome Reception.
The
competition was set for Saturday and Sunday for the 22 teams on
25 foot Santana 525 sail boats supplied by the members of the
Kelowna and Vernon yacht clubs, and with the races run by Principal
Race Officer Ron Rubadeau and the hard working Race Committee
volunteers.
Although
races were delayed on Saturday morning waiting for the wind to
build and straighten, the third race saw a brutal squall that
blew in from the north while the boats were sailing downwind with
their spinnakers flying. Many teams, caught by surprise and unable
to maintain control of their boats and sails, were tossed about
like leaves in the wind. The resulting chaos was highly entertaining
for the spectators and very challenging for the racers. Other
teams promptly doused their chutes, rounded the gates and forged
ahead in tough up-wind gusts. Sundays racing was in predictably
light winds with some frustrating delays, wind shifts, and restarts
that made things challenging for both the Race Committee and the
sailors.
With
convincing finishes, the new Canadian Womens National Keelboat
Champions proved to be the team on Shazam, skippered
by local sailor and former Canadian National Sailing Team member
Gillian Hayward, with crew Deb Johnson and Tanis Coletti from
Summerland, and Gillians former National Team partner from
Victoria, Sarah Turpie.
Runner
up was our local team on Contagious, skippered by
Gillian Thomson of the Central Okanagan Sailing Association and
crewed by local sailors Wendy Miller, Loree Felt, Janice Miller,
and Heather Johnston. Third place was won by a very talented team
of sailors from Vancouver skippered by Tine Moberg-Parker, BC
Sailing Executive Director and Coach, with crew members Frances
Cross, Jenn Grierson, Tracy St. Clair and Kelly Uniewski sailing
Quic Tric.
The
racing event was highly acclaimed by the competitors as setting
a new standard for Canadian womens sailing with outstanding
hospitality, facility services, billeting, airport pick-up and
delivery for all by event chauffeur Dietz Nicolay, and to round
out the on-shore fun, great food and entertainment. Ashbridges
Bay Yacht Club in Toronto is planning to put in a bid to host
the 2008 event and the sailors from the Okanagan are planning
to be there.
The
event raised over $8000 for New Opportunities for Women (NOW)
Canada Society, an organization that provides shelter and supports
to sexually exploited female youth and homeless women and children.
NOW Canada is thrilled to be partnering in this years
CYA Womens National Keelboat Championship. Its
an amazing fit, noted Corinne Jackson, Fundraising Coordinator
for NOW Canada. This event empowers women, encouraging
them to recognize the importance of teamwork while challenging
themselves as individuals to overcome obstacles, to be their best
and become stronger individuals in the process."
The
lucky recipient of the complete suit of Santana 525 sails donated
by Quantum Sails of Vancouver was KYCs Marty Pope,
the owner of Always Somethin.
The
organizing committee for 2007 CYA Womens National Keelboat
Championship would like to thank the many generous sponsors and
volunteers who helped make this event such a huge success.
