National Flag The national flag (ensign) is worn to signify the country of registration and demonstrates the vessel's pride in her country. Old, tattered or faded ensigns should be given the respect due them and be destroyed privately. Ensigns are worn at the No. 1 position of seniority. When passing the flag ship on Sailpast, the ensign should be dipped about a third down the gaff for a salute. If on a staff, the lowest corner of the flag should be brought to the level of the taffrail and held there until the salute is acknowledged from the flag ship.
